HEDGELEY LOW HEDGELEY NU 01 NE 4/239 Shelter sheds to north-east of main farmbuilding group GV II

Shelter sheds, probably c.1800; some alterations in mid-C19. Squared rubble with tooled quoins and dressings, undressed cobbles to rear; Welsh slate roof. Ranges around trapezoidal yard open to south. West range has boarded doors and, to right, timber arcade of 6 irregular bays. North range has similar 5-bay arcade, and east range a similar 7-bay arcade, with three 6-pane fixed windows to right. All posts are set on padstones. South gable end of east range has vertical-panelled door in alternating-block surround; boarded door to rear of north range. Attached to rear of west range is north range of main farmbuilding group (q.v.).

Interior: the arcade posts carry the tie-beams of principal-rafter roof trusses, which in turn support the lintels or arcade plate.

Interesting survival of a vernacular building type no longer common in the area.
