ACKLINGTON ACKLINGTON VILLAGE NU 20 SW (South side) 7/5 The Old Vicarage GV II
Vicarage, 1861. Probably by James Deason, for the Duke of Northumberland. Snecked stone with tooled ashlar dressings; graduated Lakeland slate roof except for Welsh slates on outshut; 2 stacks rebuilt in brick and rendered. Irregular plan. Free Tudor style.
2 storeys, 1 + 1 + 1 bays. Chamfered plinth. Projecting gabled centre has boarded and studded door, with foliate hinges, in chamfered arch with moulded hood; 2-light window to left and 3-light window above; low buttress on right return and corbelled-out reduced stack on left. Left bay shows ground-floor window, and right bay 2-light window in gabled half-dormer. Coped gables on moulded kneelers. Ridge stack rebuilt on old base and small left end stack with chamfered cap.
Left return shows 3-light transomed stair window above roof of outshut; to left of outshut a single-storey kitchen wing with openings altered (except for slatted gable window in left return, facing churchyard). Right return of main house 2 gabled bays; slightly-projecting narrower right bay has more steeply-pitched gable. Irregularly-spaced mullioned windows, those to ground floor with transoms; off-centre gable stack on left bay has octagonal shaft and chamfered cap. Similar fenestration to rear. All openings in recessed and chamfered surrounds; all windows on front and right return are small- paned iron-framed casements.
Interior: Door from vestibule to hall is identical to front door. Dog-leg closed-string stair with stop-chamfered balusters, square newels and moulded handrail.
