Details
ROTHBURY ADDYCOMBE GARDENS NU 0501 25/260 Addycombe Cottages (Nos. 13-19 25.3.73 consecutive) with attached rear walls and outbuildings (formerly listed as part of Nos 1 -22 Addycombe Cottages)
Terrace of houses 1873 by Norman Shaw for Lord Armstrong, restored and rear walls reduced in height 1978 by Spence and Price of Newcastle. Rubble with rock-faced and margined dressings; red clay tile roofs with ornamental terracotta ridges; purple slates on rear outbuildings.
Terrace of 5 houses; originally divided into flats, but the 3 centre houses have been converted to 2-storey dwellings. End houses 2 bays, centre houses 1 bay. Vertical-panelled doors with plain overlights; 2- and 3-light mullioned- and-transomed windows, the upper in gabled half dormers. Ridge stacks with battered faces. Returns show inserted C20 window and original slit window in gable; bargeboards.
Rear elevation: End houses have gabled rear wings, with 1st floor doors reached by external stone stairs. End houses have gabled outbuildings, centre houses pent outbuildings; attached yard walls with re-set arched coping.
Built as cottages for retiring staff of the Armstrong household.
