5/52 Farmbuildings to north-east of Sleekburn Cottage Farmhouse GV II

Planned farmbuildings on foldyard plan, c.1800. Squared stone with cut dressings; Welsh slate roofs except for asbestos sheets on north end of west range and west end of north range. Ranges around yard opening to south.

North range single-storeyed except for 2-storey central barn. Barn has doorway flanked by Gothick windows, that on left retaining original head with intersecting glazing bars; 5 slatted windows above; coped gables. At either side, shelter shed with 3-bay segmental arcade. Single-storey east range has segmental-arched entry and boarded door; roof hipped to right. Single-storey west range has 3-bay segmental arcade (right hand arch to passage through range) with 2 boarded doors and small casement window to right; left end, with altered openings, is now part of adjacent farmhouse (q.v.).

Rear elevation of barn shows cart entrance with timber lintel, and blocked opening for drive shaft of former gingang. Rear elevation of east range shows boarded double doors under timber lintel, 3-bay segmental arcade, 2 boarded doors and 3 part-slatted windows.

Some arches of arcades blocked in stone or brick, with later openings in blocking.

Despite some alterations,an unusual example of a smaller planned farm of c.1800; part of the estate of Bishop Shute Barrington of Durham (1791-1826).

Later brick shed on south of yard and altered range in centre of yard are not of special interest.
