5/88 Barn approx 8 metres north of The Limes.
- II
A 6 bay barn. C16/C17/C18.
MATERIALS Uncoursed limestone rubble with stone dressings and quoins, brick patching and a slate roof.
EXTERIOR In north wall is large early C16 arch blocked with 4 centred head quatrefoil spandrels and square hood. Window to left with square hood and stone dressings of same date also blocked. Part of another mullion window remains to the right of the blocked doorway and there is distinctive quoining at both the east and west gable ends.
INTERIOR The roof structure is of C19 date and comprises king post trusses with bolted collars and a central ridge plank. Two remaining chamfered tie beams have lambs tongue stops. The stone surround of a possible fireplace is apparent off-centre on the rear wall and the chamfered stone surrounds of both windows are evident.
HISTORY The barn is part of a steading, the other buildings of which have been considerably altered. The building was historically sub-divided between two farms and at one stage was partly in use as a stable. It is said that the door surround and mullion windows are re-used from a priory. The building is in a poor state of repair and is currently on the Buildings at Risk Register.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION DECISION The barn north of the Limes has special architectural and historic interest for the following principal reasons. * It retains a significant proportion of original C16 fabric. * It has C16 architectural features of interest including stone mullion windows and a central blocked door with quatrefoil spandrels.
