6/5 Oxnead Hall. 10/5/61 G.V. II*

Country House. Late C16 with major C19 additions. Red brick with steeply- pitched plain-tiled roofs, Of two builds, the north-western range being the remaining service wing of a late C16 house built by the Paston family. Two storeys and attics. Mullion and transom windows of plastered brick. Octagonal angle shafts with moulded brick finials. Parapeted gables with roll-moulded copings and moulded and corbelled gable finials. West facade symmetrical, with some openings blocked on ground and first floor level. Two lunette windows. Good framed and pedimented door c.1600 with fanlight in segmental- headed opening. Moulded brick string course at first floor level. Blocked opening in north gable. Brick modillion eaves course. C19 range in similar style at south-east, parallel to earlier range : octagonal angle shafts, mullion and transom windows. Sash windows with glazing bars and architraves. Two sashes with segmental heads and margin lights. 'Three massive external chimney stacks on east side with attached shafts, moulded brick caps and bases. Two storey gabled porch at south-east corner with elliptical arched openings with plastered quoins. First floor blocked opening. Parapeted gable. Later hipped extensions at south gable. Earlier range has principal rafters braced by elbowed uprights as Morley Old Hall (see Mercer "English Vernacular Houses HMSO 1975 Plate 65).
