HECKINGHAM YARMOUTH ROAD TM 39 NE 6/29 HALES HOSPITAL (formerly listed as 11/1A Union workhouse
- II
Former workhouse, now hospital. Built 1764, with much C20 addition and remodelling. Red brick, hipped roofs of smut pantiles. Two storeys,H-shaped plan with two courtyards. South courtyard has ground floor sashes with glazing bars, some with segmental heads and some with flat gauged arches. 2-light first floor casements andhorizontal sliding sashes with glazing bars. Return wings on south-east and south-west have wide rubbed brick eliptical arches with inset sash windows with glazing bars and architraves. Openings in south walls much altered. Platband at first floor level. North courtyard has sashes and casements with glazing bars, some horizontal sliding sashes. Openings have rubbed arches, some with cambered soffits. Ridge chimney stacks, symmetrically placed; one stack on east range straddles the ridge with arched opening between shafts and pedimented cap.Later two storey range along north side of north courtyard, incorporating someC18 and C19 work.
