Country House. 1809-1812. Attributed to Humphry Repton and Sons, who drew
up plans for remodelling in 1809. Plan B illustrates an Italianate house
not executed. Plan A cannot be traced. Gault brick with slate roofs. East
facade of 2 storeys in 3 bays, central bay recessed. Half round Ionic porch
supported on 2 columns and 2 Doric pilasters. Balustrade over. Sash windows
with glazing bars beneath gauged skewback arches, the ground floor windows
within round-headed rebates. Northern window altered to fill entire recess.
Modillion eaves cornice. Hipped roofs. South front again of 2 storeys with
a central full height 3 bay bow flanked by 3 bays of windows to upper floor
above a single Wyatt window each side to ground floor. Wyatt windows with
Corinthian pilasters and pediments. All windows are sashes with glazing bars
beneath gauged skewback arches. Cornice as before. 2 storey, 3 bay, west
facade. Central bay with single storey 3 bay bow. Ground floor sashes within
blank round-headed niches. All sashes with glazing bars and gauged skewback
arches. Cornice continues into this facade. To north a 2 storey, 2 bay
service wing. Sash windows with glazing bars and gauged skewback arches.
Dentil eaves cornice and hipped roof. Main house with irregularly disposed
stacks. 2 central ridge stacks to service wing. Interior. Entrance hall
enriched by pair of unfluted Ionic columns in antis. Library with doorcases
in shouldered architraves, shelves below broken pediments, repeated over fire-
place and window surrounds of fluted Ionic pilasters. Cantilevered staircase
in inner hall with scrolled tread ends, wrought iron balusters and wreathed
handrail.
