Almshouses

G.V. II
Almshouses. Two ranges, originally built 1757, much remodelled and linked by
Gothic entrance screen in 1840's by S S Teulon. Almshouses of gault brick with
steeply pitched shingled roofs. One storey. Two-light casement windows in
chamfered brick surrounds with central mullion. Casements with cast-iron
tracery forming octagonal patterns. Two entrance doors in each range with
four-centred brick arches. Crow-stepped gables with finials. Two large chimney
stacks on each ridge line with twin diagonally set shafts and moulded tops. Each
block linked to central gateway by gault brick screen wall pierced by five
four-centred arches with continuous rectangular drip moulds over. Wrought iron
screens in opening. Roll-moulded brick coping to wall. Central four-centred
arched gateway to Park with angle buttresses and stepped and coped overthrow
in gault brick with Tripartite decorative panel.
