5/75 Hullock's Pool Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Mid C16 (1513 date on bressumer not necessarily integral) enlarged in late C17 or early C18: re-cased in C19. Timber framed with plastered brick in-fill: tiled roof. 3-room, cross- passage plan to main range (aligned N/S) with parlour wing over cellar added to form L-shaped plan overall. Exterior: all original framing members concealed behind affixed planking. One and a half storeys. Garden front with 3 C20 shallow bay windows and 3 3-light dormers. C19 or later lean-to extensions to right. Roadside elevations with C20 casements, bowed to principal range which has dormers in addition. 2 ridge stacks and a third stack to lower slope of wing. Interior. Whilst many of the principal timbers of the external structure are obscured by later planking, it is clear that a complete C16 and C17 house survives here. Main range: service room (to N) with chamfered bressumer to end inglenook (partly blocked), chamfered and moulded cross ceiling beam and exposed framing to internal partition which rests on massive sill beam. Hall has framed ceiling of 9 panels, deeply chamfered ceiling beams and stopped joists. Fireplace bressumer with two tiers of flat coiled moulding and the date (possibly added) RB 1513 (commemorating Robert Boughey). Hall and parlour divided by framed partition and back-to-back fireplace (which may have a shared timber-framed internal stack). Parlour (S) with 2 chamfered axial ceiling beams. Winder stair to W of fireplace. All framing with uprights and straight diagonal struts, the internal walls with wattle and daub in-fill. Queen-post roof with trenched side purlins visible in upper floor. No direct access between room over parlour and those over hall and services. Wing with brick-lined basement; ground-floor room with chamfered and stopped beams and joists. Steep stairs (serving upper room of wing only) with turned balusters on square-section bases look c1720. Despite external appearances this is a well-preserved and interesting farmhouse of the C16 and C17.
