Details

BULWICK BULWICK PARK SP99SE 6/3 Walls and attacned steps 23/05/67 attached to SE of, and extending to approx. 100m S and 150m SW of Bulwick Hall (Formerly listed as Garden walls, gatepiers, terraces and iron railings at Bulwick Hall) GV II Garden and terrace walls and attached steps. Gardens probably laid out in about 1676 for James Tryon, walls are mainly C18 restored C19 and C20. Squared coursed limestone and squared coursed limestone faced with red brick, parts with ashlar coping and part with brick header coping. Part of the south wall forms a retaining wall to the terrace and has attached steps which form 2 flights, with half landings, meeting at the centre of the terrace. The C20 handrails incorporate remains of C18 ironwork. The wall attached to the south-east of Bulwick Hall and attached entrance loggia and garden room (q.v.) has a pair of ashlar seat niches with semi-circular heads similar to niches in the entrance loggia. Gateways in the walls are linked by wooden gates, James Tryon's original garden consisted of 2 parterres in front of Bulwick Hall; these were probably within the area enclosed by the terrace wall and the walls at right angles to either end of the terrace. The area enclosed by walls to the south was probably also part of James Tryon's garden. (RCHM: An Inventory of Architectural Monuments in North Northamptonshire: p28)
