Details
HORHAM THE STREET TM 27 SW 5/125 Veldon Cottage II House. Early C16, extended C17, re-roofed C20. Render over timber frame; gabled pantile roof; brick ridge stack. 2 storeys, 4-window range. 3 cell Plan. Small-paned casement windows of stained timber, inserted c.1987. Gabled porch in position of original cross-entry, C20 reproduction plank door. Lean-to addition on north gable end, rendered and with a slated roof; C20 boarded door. Further small lean-to additions at rear. Interior: Original house had 2-cell, end-chimney plan: substantial, widely-spaced studding; reverse-curved braces, halved against the inside faces of the wallplates rather than being morticed into them. Evidence for several diamond-mullioned windows, including one of 6 lights in the hall. Many first floor timbers have remains of red ochre decoration. The present stack replaces an original timber chimney within a bay only 0.6 m wide at the north end. Cross-partition at lower end of hall has 2 intact 4-centre arched service doorways. No corresponding partition at first floor level. Incomplete original entrance doorway with heavy 2-centred arch. Hall ceiling has chamfered main beam and plain joists set flat. Service end has joists of varied quality and a solid-tread stair, possibly original. One-bay parlour addition to north of stack: exposed first floor studding, ground floor ceiling with chamfered axial beam and rather irregular plain joists, still set flat. Included as an important example of a small early C16 dwelling complete with service doors and other features.
