House. Said to be built in 1838. Pebbledashed with painted
ashlar dressings and slate roof. Double-depth plan.
A symmetrical composition of 2 storeys plus attic above a
basement and 3 bays, with chamfered quoins and a moulded
cornice gutter. The windows are glazing bar sashes with
architraves. The attic is lit by a central lunette window
within a gable which is treated as an open pediment. The
Tuscan pilaster doorcase is of stone and has an open pediment.
The door is of 6 panels, the upper ones raised and fielded and
the lower ones with reeded borders. The fanlight has
intersecting glazing bars. The doorway is approached by 4
stone steps with nosings. To left and right a low stone wall
carries iron railings with fleur-de-lys finials. Gable
chimneys. The right-hand return wall includes a Venetian stair
window.
INTERIOR: the left-hand front room contains a built-in
mahogany cupboard with Gothick glazing, and a grey marble
fireplace surround with reeded pilasters. The doors to the
front rooms have panels with borders formed by applied
mouldings. The rear stair hall contains a stair with closed
string, slim turned balusters, and a turned pine newel. The
Venetian window has fluted pilasters as mullions, and a
dentilled cornice.
HISTORICAL NOTE: said to be built as the residence of the
workhouse governor.
