GV II
Anglican church. 1828-9. By RD Chantrell. For the Church Commissioners. Restored and enlarged 1863-4 by Perkin and Bulmer, further alterations 1874 by Henry Walker. Gothic Revival style. Hammer-dressed gritstone ashlar, slate roof. PLAN: nave with 5 lancet windows, hoodmoulds, N and S aisles under one roof; N and S transepts with 4-light decorated tracery. EXTERIOR: west tower of 3 stages with W door in deep roll-moulded surround with gable over, traceried double doors, lancet window above, clock, single-light belfry window, pinnacles and stone octagonal spire with lucarnes. E end: vestry, chancel with paired lancet windows, 3-light E window, arched over the table tomb of Richard Oastler and other grave slabs. INTERIOR: 6-bay nave and 2-bay original chancel extended a further 3 bays with 3-bay transepts. Original work has quatrefoil columns, plain columns to extension. 5 tie-beam trusses to nave have quatrefoils and cusped decoration, tiled and mosaic chancel floor; wooden reredos with painted figures of saints, open quatrefoil arched frontals to choir stalls, heavily carved square wooden pulpit on octagonal base, west gallery with wooden panelling and brass handrail. Stained glass in E window: Christ in Glory flanked by St Stephen and St Paul; in S wall of nave a memorial window to Thomas Butler, d.1873 (Thoresby Society Publications, Second Series, Vol 2: Webster C: RD Chantrell, Architect: his life and work in Leeds 1818-47: 1991-).
