Formerly known as: The Builders' Inn NORTH STREET. Public house. Early C19. Painted brick, low-pitched slate hipped roof. Bracketed eaves. 3 storeys, 3+1 windows, corner site with 3 windows to left return. Door with overlight in moulded surround with cornice, canted bay window left, good bow window of 3 lights right. Sashes with glazing bars, 2- and 4-panes wide, some restored, flat arches. Eaves brackets. Small early C19 shop window on right removed. INTERIOR: replanned and refitted late C20. The building was constructed in 1826 by James Bussey, stonemason. After the passing of the 1830 Beer Act, James' son, Robert, opened The Builders' Inn and combined the trades of plaster, colourer and whitewasher with that of retail ale and porter dealer. After several changes of name the McQuat Brothers, brewers, of Meadow Lane, bought The Eagle in 1914. In 1947 the brewery, with 9 public houses, was bought by Samuel Smith, brewery of Tadcaster.
