United Methodist Free Church, now carpet warehouse. c1880, altered C20. To designs by Thomas Ambler of Leeds. Baroque Revival style. Ashlar front and brick sides, stone dressed, with former Sunday School cross wing at rear. The grand front with a deep plinth is dominated by a giant Corinthian columned bowed portico, the full entablature surmounted by a balustrade with urn finials on the dies, is returned over narrow flanking bays and then broken forward over giant Corinthian quoin pilastered corner towers. Pedimented gable set back behind portico. Half of the circular domed entrance vestibule breaks out into the portico abutting the columns with pedimented doorways following curve. Rosette plaques and squat pilastered windows to recessed first floor. The narrow flanking bays have cartouches and round-headed lights. Eared architrave, round-arched windows to towers, pediments on consoles to ground floor. The console bracketed eaves cornice studded with lion heads is returned along brick sides. Recessed round-arched window bay. Vermiculated plinth.
INTERIOR: virtually intact apart from removal of pews. The vestibule projecting into the portico has a compartmented dome internally lofty interior to chapel proper with deep cove to compartmented ceiling, rich plasterwork, large pendant decorative 'trumpet' vents to each compartment. Ornate acanthus and drop finialed frame with square panel containing rose to ceiling of organ loft apse. Curved ended all round gallery, vast seating capacity, on cast-iron columns with foliate capitals. The deep end of gallery above entrance has screen of similar ornate cast-iron columns supporting corbelled coved ceiling at higher level. Little altered in spite of change of use.
