Offices. c1870. Ashlar, roof not visible. 3 storeys and basement, three 2-window bays. Steps up to panelled double doors with overlight left, segmental arch with carved capitals to attached columns and pilasters. Arcaded windows to ground and 1st floors, moulded round arches and carved capitals to pilaster shafts; entablature over ground floor with carved frieze of scrolls and bearded heads, carved scrolls and plaque over 1st-floor windows. Shouldered heads to 2nd-floor windows, pilaster shafts with carved capitals; heavy modillion cornice with lion heads to end pilasters, arcaded parapet with urns and central panel with lettering: 'ESTABLISHED/ 1840', surmounted by a statue of Britannia and lion. INTERIOR: not inspected. The earliest Directory entry for offices is 1872 when this building is the premises of the County Fire and Provident Life Association, (Chedorlaomer Gardiner, superintendent), a cloth merchant, a solicitor, and William Wilks who was an architect, surveyor, licensed valuer and arbitrator.
