Terrace of 3 town houses, now houses and flats (Nos 1-5 in the 1972 list now renumbered). Mid C19. Flemish bond brown brick, stucco, grey slate roof. Italianate style. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys to entrance front, 3 storeys to gardens, south, with a tower one storey higher at each end; 11 windows to front, including towers. The ground floor has 3 projecting Roman Doric porches, the central one in a slightly projecting bay and with paired columns; full entablatures. Banded stucco quoins to porch bays, party-lines and corners; 4-panel doors with plain fanlights; round-arched 11-pane recessed sashes, two between each pair of porches and one in each end-bay of main block; ground floor of each end-tower altered; inserted doorway in place of triple window on right tower; carport porch roof in front of left tower, recessed from main block. Cornice band at first floor with stucco to sillband above, having balustraded panels beneath each 12-pane sash. All sashes have stucco architraves, the 3 above porches with ornate entablatures. The towers, set well back, have pilastered tripartite 3-pane sashes with shell tympana. Pediment to external bay; frieze and cornice on brackets to main block; at base 4 chimneys with stucco cornices; quintuple pilastered round-arched 3-pane sash to second floor of each tower. Architraves to brick panels of sash size in ends. The south face to the gardens has cast-iron verandah with balcony to first floor. Central element of 4 windows, the first and fourth set back from the second and third; a projecting 2-bay pavilion to each side; the end-towers recessed. The ground floor is altered; French windows and sashes to upper storeys detailed similarly to the front. INTERIOR not inspected. Nos 1, 1A and 1B are altered, but stairs and other elements of the original design are noted to be present in Nos 2 and 3. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: the ground floor to the gardens forms a basement to the front, with 2 external stairs of stone to areas with cast-iron area front rails and simple rails to stairs; stucco basement walls.
