Bank. 1793-1803. Said to be by Lewis Wyatt, extended to south 1897 by TM Lockwood. Yellow ashlar sandstone to front; stone-dressed orange-brown brick to St John Street, left; grey slate roof with lead to hips. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys of 3 bays; almost symmetrical front. Plinth with 3 stone steps to projecting central bay. 3 curved apron steps to double 4-panel oak doors under moulded hood on consoles in left bay; simple wrought-iron railing. the central bay has 4 Tuscan three-quarter columns with recessed panels between; stone sill above the panels; substantial 6-pane central sash; a 3-pane fixed light to each side; the right bay has a 6-pane horned sash. First floor entablature to central bay; hood, matching that over doorway, over window to right bay; a floor-band to each side bay lines with cornice of central entablature. The first floor has a central 5;15;5 pane tripartite sash with panelled mullions; pediment. Each side-bay has a 12-pane recessed sash with no sill and a recessed panel above. Moulded cornice and 1-course parapet. The left side has plinth with moulded cap, 2 tripartite 2;2;2 pane sashes with moulded stone sills, panelled mullions and entablatures to the ground floor; the first floor has 4 recessed 12-pane sashes in shouldered and eared architraves. The 1897 rear wing is single storey with stone-dressed openings: a round window, a 3-panel oak door with overlight and 3 unequal 9-pane sashes. Parapet with moulded stone coping. The main block has 2 symmetrically placed stone-capped brick chimneys; a moulded stone-dressed rear chimney. 3 rear windows to main block, one a 15-pane unequal sash, the others altered. INTERIOR: has columns and moulded beams in the banking hall. (Hemingway J: History of Chester: Chester: 1831-; Chester City Council and Committee: Improvement Committee Minutes: 17.11.1897).
