Arch from St Michael's Church

(Formerly Listed as: GROSVENOR PARK West doorway from old St Michael's Church)

II

GV

Archway, said to be from west front of St Michael's Church
(now Heritage Centre, Bridge Street and Row, Chester IM).
Perhaps late C12. Red sandstone. Badly eroded; removed from
the church probably 1849-50 when it was largely rebuilt by
James Harrison. A round archway with hollow chamfer and eroded
arris-mould to east face; a gabled hoodmould; buttresses at
south-east and north-east corners. A small pointed archway
north, perhaps from another source; it has one stone forming
each side of arch, the north stone broken in two; a recessed
chamfer to west face and an eroded square rebate, east.
(Bartholomew City Guides: Harris B: Chester: 1979-: 122, 159).
