GV I
Part of City Wall on line of north wall of Roman legionary fortress adjoining the former north-west corner tower. Medieval wall of late C11 to early C12 origin converted to raised promenade 1702-8 and subsequently repaired. Red sandstone coursed rubble. The outline of the Roman north-west corner tower is marked in setts let into the pavement at the corner of St Martin's Way and Water Tower Street. The masonry of the medieval wall shows much subsequent repair. Opposite Morgan's Mount (qv), a stone stair of 2 flights of steps may indicate the projection of a former tower. This length of the wall is approx 30m long and approx 2m wide. (Strickland TJ: Roman Chester: Nelson: 1984-1986: PASSIM; Bartholomew City Guides: Harris B: Chester: Edinburgh: 1979-: 85; The Buildings of England: Pevsner N & Hubbard E: Cheshire: 1971-: 155).
