Warehouse "K"

II

Tobacco warehouse. c. 1850-55. An original Victoria Dock tobacco warehouse, the first dock designed for rail servicing. Stock brick; slate roof. 3 storeys; 26-window range. Ground floor as basement to the south. Stepped brick eaves parapet. 3 symmetrically spaced 3-storey hatched ranks with hoists, one retaining original hipped slate roof to east end of range. Pilaster strips divide recessed panels containing segmental arched windows: iron-framed, of 3 lights with small panes. Bowed individual areas in front of ground-floor windows to south.
Internal construction of vast floor areas with iron inverted T-girder timber sandwiched beams on cast-iron columns, spaces between joists on ground floor only. Considerable decrease in ceiling height from first floor up. Stone staircase and iron-plated bond doors. Single balk main beam to first floor which at its east end has a tobacco drying room. The attic floor has a fine sequence of splayed Queen post trusses, the majority of single exceptional span but some are notch lapped. Iron vertical tension rods bolted to ties. Intricate system of dragon beams and supporting posts to east hipped end.
