Archway succeeding former gateway carrying the City Wall over Pepper Street. 1937-8. By Sir Walter Tapper and Michael Tapper. Red sandstone. Designed to provide width and headroom to a heavily trafficked street, the Newgate has a large steeply-curved segmental archway flanked by 2 battered towers with mock loops and hipped roofs of solid stone. The wall walk rises by a flight of steps through each tower to reach the necessary level above the archway. The arch has soffit of rendered panels between 3 ribs. There are armorial shields and Tudor roses for decoration. A stone stair in the south tower descends to Park Street.
