Row of 6 cottages. 1890 dated on plaque. By Elijah Hoole. Red
brick with tile hanging and pitched tiled roof. Strong Arts
and Crafts influence.
2 storeys, 1 bay each. No.1 terminates row with gable end to
street, its whole upper half tile-hung and entrance in left
return. Plain doors (that to No.3 late C20) with rectangular
fanlights, a window beside each. 2-light sash windows, those
to 1st floor in segmental-arched reveals and with stucco sill
string, those to ground-floor with stucco sills. Broad
tile-hung band between floors.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
The Whitecross Cottages form an important group with Nos 8 &
8A (qv) and the Redcross Cottages (qv) fronting Redcross
Gardens behind, demonstrating the ideals of Octavia Hill, the
pioneer of wholesome working class housing.
