A C16 timber-framed and plastered house comprising a 2 storey gabled block at
the west end, with a jettied upper storey and a single storey wing with attic
and cellar on the east end. The jettied upper storey of the west block is carried
on a bressumer carved with running leaf ornamentation and supported on brackets
with the remains of shafts. The gable projects slightly and has curved braces
below the apex. The windows are C20, casements with gazing bars. Roof tiled,
with 2 gabled dormers on te south front. The interior has moulded and carved
ceiling joists and beams with running leaf ornamentation and 2 doorways with
carved spandrels.
Layfield and house adjoining, The Red House and Mumfords form a group.
