Northowram Hall and attached conservatory

Country house, attached conservatory. c1700, remodelled and with additions c1863 and c1895. Ashlar, with ashlar dressings and hipped and gabled slate roofs. Coped ridge stacks. Plinth, lintel and sill bands, angle pilasters, eaves cornice and blocking course with finials. 2 storeys; 6 x 8 windows. L-plan. Windows are mainly wooden cross casements, those to the main fronts with leaded glazing and moulded ashlar surrounds. Entrance front has a central portico with rusticated columns and crested parapet, covering a round arched door with fanlight. On each side, a round arched window. Above, a cartouche, flanked by single windows. Beyond, canted bay windows, 2 storeys, 3 lights. To right, side range with 2 windows on each floor. Right return, 8 windows, has a central gabled porch and above it, a round arched window. To left a projecting end bay. Below it, a single storey projection, 2 windows, with flat roof behind parapet. Attached at right angles, a round carriage arch with round topped shouldered gable. Left return, 5 windows, has a projecting central bay and regular fenestration. Beyond, rear wing, 2 storeys. Across the front of the rear wing, a wooden lean-to glasshouse with round arched leaded lights. At the right end, a polygonal sun room with pyramidal slate roof. To left, a glazed corridor, 5 bays, leading to a large conservatory. Conservatory, 9 bays, has a stepped ashlar plinth and wooden structure with elliptical arched lights and toplights. Hipped clerestorey roof. Central glazed double door with glazed pediment. Interior: entrance hall has a stone cross-mullioned glazed screen. Tudor arched wooden arcade, 3 bays, giving access to splay footed open well stair and landing, with twist balusters. Landing has sham timbr framing. To right, an open-plan room with panelled dado and sham timber framing. Ashlar and brick fireplace Renaissance Revival style, with turned and panelled balusters and strapwork overmantel. Ground floor room to left has oval panelled ceiling with foliage frieze and enriched cornice. Wooden fireplace, late C19, with panelled overmantel, flanked by glazed bookcases. Corresponding room to right has a timber framed recess enclosing the door, and Tudor arched ashlar fireplace with Renaissance Revival overmantel.
