2/39 The Cottage - - II
House. Early C17 and mid C19. 2 storeys: in 2 linked ranges, one timber-framed and rendered with hipped, pantiled roof, the other flint and red brick with lean-to slate roof. Set sideways-on to road. The older south (timber-framed) range has an internal chimney-stack with a plain shaft of small red Tudor bricks. A wide canted bay window to the ground storey of the gable end: small- paned sash windows above. The timber frame is in 4 bays, without a chimney- bay, and the stack gives the impression of being secondary. An original studded partition, removed from near the south wall in the eastern bay, indicates that part of the house extended in a wing further southwards. The studding is substantial, with near-straight arched braces similar to those in No. 12. A small section of a truss between the 2nd and 3rd bays seems to be a fragment of an older frame. Rafters covered.
