Details

GREAT BEALINGS BOOT STREET TM 24 NW (North Side) 4/67 No's 1 & 2 Old Rectory Cottages II Two cottages, formerly rectory. Late C15 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed with colourwashed render and a brick skin in parts and a pantile roof (probably originally thatched). H-shaped plan. Road front: projecting wings at either side, the front has entirely C20 fenestration with metal-framed windows. The right hand wing has, to its ground floor one 3-light and one 2-light casement and at first floor level one 3-light casement. Between these wings to the ground floor are, at right, a 3-light window and at left a 2-light window and to the first floor two 3-light casements. To the left hand gable end are, at right, a plank door and to left of this a four-light casement set in brick walling and the first floor has a 3-light casement. Adjoining the left hand gable is a lean-to. The ridge of the right hand gabled wing is at a slightly lower level than the rest of the roof and the right hand end of the spinal ridge is slightly hipped to take account of this. Chimney stack of 3 flues of C19 brick below the ridge and at right. The right hand gable end has slightly battered walling, a C20 half-glazed door at right and a single- light window at right of centre to the first floor. The left hand side has, at ground floor right, a lean-to. Rear: the left hand wing projects but the right hand wing is flush with the central range. C19 outshut running along the rear, flush with the projecting face of the left hand wing. This has C20 fenestration. The right hand wing, which is partially masked by the outshut, has a 2-light ground-floor casement at right. To the first floor at right is one 3-light window and at left a single-light window. The left hand gable has one 3-light and two single-light casements at ground floor level and a 3-light casement to the first floor.

Interior: chamfered ceiling beams to one ground floor room in the left hand cross-wing, with chamfered joists between. One ground floor room to the central range in No.2 has ceiling joists with angle beads and a massive, richly-moulded beam with cavetto moulds to the underside, roll mouldings to the corners and sides and a cavetto mould above these, also to the sides. The joists continue to the ceilings of No.1. Close studded walling to the ground and first floors and jowled wall posts at first floor level.
