Almshouse group. c1912 by Sir Mervyn Macartney. Red brick with coved cornice to swept hipped plain tiled roof with end stacks and central cupola on 4 columns. Single storey. 5 bay centres with central arched through-way flanked by brick quasi-pilasters and single casements. Outer projections with single casements flanked by recessed arched entrances. Quadrant walls between piers surmounted by globes connect the central block to small pavilions with end stacks and arched entrances in the same stlye. Whiteley Village was provided by Milliam Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading architects of the day.
