FRIMLEY AND CAMBERLEY UD
In the entry for The Grove Frimley Green 7/51 Middle Gingers
II The description shall be amended to read:
Cottage. Early C17, extended to one end in the mid C.19 and with further C.19 and C.20 extensions to the North facing the entrance. Timber framed on white washed stone plinth with white washed brick infill above and rendered cladding to eaves. Pebble dash cladding on C.19 extensions and brick extensions to North. Plain tiled roofs hipped over and extensions and C.20 concrete over older range. Double stack to left of centre at junction with C.19 range. This is built externally to the timber framed range and dates from the C.19 addition. One storey and attic on old framed range, two storeys to left. Garden front (and rear), three framed bays to old range with C.19 casement fenestration. Two light outer casements and smaller window to right of window. Glazed C.20 door to left of centre, small gabled dormer to left of centre. Chimney bay to left and three horizontal beams of thin scantling (the original corner post has been removed) linking to C.19 range having one glazing bar C.20 window on each floor in older C.19 architrave surrounds. Right hand return front (east), small gable end stack, blocked doorway to right. Entrance front; majority of the old structure obscured by single storey extensions at right angles to right of centre. Original doorway is in the second bay from the left and is now converted to a window. Interior: Original range is of three bays with once possibly baffle entry in the centre. The stack is now removed and the two outer bays are now heated by later stacks built externally to the timber frame at either gable. The frame is largely intact with some arch-bracing to the cross walls. The first floor is largely original with axial beams over the outer rooms, some original wide plank boarding above. The staircase is an extremely rare and primitive ladder type with staggered dual treads. The roof structure is complete apart from the cut central tie beam and the patched hole in the north-west slope where the original stack emerged. It is a common rafter roof with rafters halved and pegged at the apex. Single purlin, no ridge piece. The garret was lit by gable windows, now altered by the attached stacks. A remarkably complete and unaltered C.17 cottage with a rare ladder stair. The C.19 and later additions are not of special interest and have no internal features of value.
