5/6 East and West Chennells
II
House, now divided. Late 1870s rebuild of C17 house with cartouche dating of 1636. Timber framed, underbuilt in red and blue chequer-work brick. Square panel frame with mortar-rendered ironstone infilling above, brick infilling in gables. Plain tiled roofs. Two storeys and attics with brick dentil band over ground floor and jettied gables. Double gable front to street with fine, carved bargeboards - animals and fruit with pendant finials. Square corbelled stack to rear. One attic casement window in gable and two windows on each floor below, those to ground floor under cambered heads. Gabled porch with cusped bargeboards and central spike finial. Half open, diamond mullions to top on rubblestone walls. Cartouche in gable inscribed: "1636 in the Hundred of Blackheath sold freehold by H Chennel with all priviledges and rights to the property and Commons Pasture and Turbary "sans nombre". "
An early example of rebuilding in the C17 Vernacular style.
