1/161 Ruins of Newark 14/6/67 Priory

I

Priory. Founded in late C12, possibly by Raul de Calna and his wife Beatrice de Saudes; for Augustinian Canons. Dissolved in 1538/9 by Henry VIII. Flint rubble with lime mortar. Excavations of 1928 revealed a C13 Cruciform Church with cloister, kitchens and farmery,gatehouse and tower/steeple were separate. All that remains are the south transept - to its full height but unroofed - South wall of the passage to the farmery, north and south walls of Presbytery and choir - to full height - and part of the north chapel. South transept gable end contains one lancet window opening, 3 window openings to east and west walls. South walls of Presbytery and choir have 5 window openings, 3 windows on north wall.
