LEIGH C.P. CLAYHILL ROAD TQ 24NW The Green 6/138 Scholars GV II
Former Village School, now house. c1860. Red brick with stone angle quoins and tiled roofs including alternate bands of diamond-point and fishscale pattern tiling. Stone quoins to stacks and wooden lantern on roof ridge to right under pyramidal cap. Long rectangular plan on corner site with cross wings to left and larger cross wing to right. Two storeys to left end, single storey to right with right hand cross wing being the former school hall. Stacks to left end, left side of left cross wing, rear right of centre and to rear. Pierced wavy-edged barge- hoards to gables on left and left hand return front, ridge cresting on roofs to right. Mullioned and transomed windows to left, one on first floor, one below; that to front in pentice roofed square-bay. Large stone dressed "cross" windows to ends of hall range with mullions of half-round section, plate glass windows to right. Windows on right hand return front have hexagonal and diamond-pattern glazing in upper lights over plain lower lights. Panelled door to right under lantern; old main door to left in recessed range between cross wings with half- open balustraded corridor in front. New main entrance now to rear. The school forms an important part of the group around the Village Green.
