Terrace of four houses, mostly school and office (at time of listing) later converted to offices. Early to mid C19. Stock brick in Flemish bond (basement, sides and rear of flint with brick quoins), slate roof. Rectangular plan, each house single-fronted. Three storeys over a high service basement, 2+2+2+2 bays divided by narrow channels (for downspouts); symmetrical, the doorways of Nos. 30 and 32 coupled in the centre and the doorways of Nos. 28 and 34 at the outer ends; all the openings at ground floor are round-headed with intersecting glazing bars and margin panes, and have gauged brick heads: the doorways have set-in fluted columns, panelled doors, and fanlights, and the sashed windows are recessed. The upper floors have sashed windows of twelve and nine panes respectively with gauged brick heads and raised sills. The basements have large segmental-headed sixteen-pane sashed windows and doors under the bridges. Hipped roof (eaves of No. 28 now projecting), two chimney stacks on the ridge each with two sets of eight chimney pots. (A two storey addition to the right-hand side of No.28 is not included in the item.) The rear, of knapped flint with brick dressings, has segmental-headed sashed windows mostly of twelve and nine panes, and there is a modern single-storey flat-roofed extension to No.30. The raised front garden has a retaining wall of flint on which are mounted cast-iron spear railings with urn finials to the standards, and in the centre a common gateway to Nos.30 and 32 which has ramped double gates and a scrolled wrought-iron over-throw with a circular lamp-holder, and steps up to the houses protected by similar railings; at the left end a very long flight of steps to No.34 has restored railings. The item is a good example of early C19 middle class town housing. Listing NGR: TQ1640956378
