GODALMING ASHSTEAD LANE SU 94 SE (south side) 2/2 Gate lodge to Ladywell Convent GV II

Gate lodge. 1910 by Sir Guy Dawber for Major-General D A Scott; late-C20 exten- sions. Bargate rubblestone with brick dressings; plain tile roof. 1 storey with attic; gabled cruciform plan, the 2 ranges each of 3 bays. In Jacobean style having double-chamfered mullion windows with leaded lights and dripmoulds, slits in gable apexes, wooden rainwater pipes and stepped, brick eaves. Drive (east) elevation: on right, in angle of ranges, is hipped-roofed canopy protect- ing door in moulded surround; gabled bay on left has 2-light window with 3-light window above; swept roof; ribbed and corniced stack to ridge of wing projecting on right. Right return: 1-light window to left of gabled central bay which has 3-light window with 2-light window over. Left return: 2-light windows flank central bay which has 4-light 1st floor window and hipped gable. Late-C20 link bay and added wing at rear of lodge not of special interest.
