GV II

Block of flats. Completed 1897. By RM Taylor. For the LCC's Housing Branch. Brick with some stone dressings; slate roof. PLAN: balcony access block forming a pair with Albury House (qv) which faces it across the street. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys. Arts and Crafts details, particularly to Silex Street elevation which has juxtaposition of gables and angular end-on chimney breasts. Gabled sections are canted out, the chimneys corbelled out at 1st-floor level and carried up bartizan-wise to emerge above the skyline. The central gabled section has 2 chimneys, between which are casement windows within round-arched recesses on each floor above ground-floor entrance. Outer gabled sections have only 1 chimney and are blind. Some sash windows with glazing bars and segmental, gauged-brick arches. Smaller broad segmental-headed casement windows in recessed sections, those on 2nd floor tucked beneath wide eaves. Elevation to Boyfield Street has staircase in central gabled section with Tudor details; stone dressings to openings: tripartite mullioned windows above round-arched ground-floor entrance with alternate block surrounds. Front doors to individual flats on upper floors are approached along short access balconies with simple ironwork. Ground-floor entrances in recesses. Windows mostly paired sashes with glazing bars and segmental, gauged-brick arches. INTERIOR: not inspected. As a pair with Albury House (qv), generally identical to the 2 blocks at Rushworth Street, Merrow House and Ripley House (qv).
