TQ3277 BURGESS PARK 636-1/10/121 Lime kiln, south-south-west of junction of Albany Road and Wells Way
II
Lime kiln, built for the manufacture of Roman cement. Early C19. Brick in English bond; the inside of the cone has been relined with bricks several times. Single stage, with battered walls; octagonal in plan, with long and short facets alternating. Each short pierced at the base by a round-arched drawhole, once topped probably by a short canopy to give the workman feeding the fire protection from the elements. Cone in the centre, to help the burnt cement fall through the drawholes, partly diminished in height. Kiln interior is an inverted, truncated cone.
