CAMBERWELL NEW ROAD
(North side)
Nos.211 AND 213)
GV II
3 houses. Early C19. Painted stucco to ground floor and
basement of Nos 211 & 213, to basement only of No.215. The
other surfaces in the front wall are brick in Flemish bond.
Stucco cornice band to parapets of Nos 211 & 213; plain stucco
parapet to No.215.
3 storeys over basement. 2 windows each. Entrances to Nos 211
& 213 reached up a short flight of steps. They are set at the
outer corners of the pair and deep within a recessed porch
framed by a Tuscan aedicule. Moulded architrave with console
supported cornice to ground-floor window beside each entrance.
Sill band to 1st-floor windows which have a moulded and eared
architrave.
Flush stucco architraves to openings of No.215, which has a
round-arched entrance set to right party wall and a
round-arched window to the left of this. All upper-floor
openings of the latter unit are flat-arched.
2x2 sashes with margin lights to all openings in Nos 211 & 213
except for ground-floor window of the latter. 6x6 sashes to
2nd-floor windows of No.215. A narrow recess on the party wall
between No.211 & No.213 reinforces the bilateral symmetry of
this pair. No.215, although of similar dimensions and date,
was much less distinguished when first completed. Although
altered, it forms a good group with Nos 211 & 213.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Nos 211 & 213 have wrought-iron handrails
of C19 design to front steps and railings enclosing front
area; these 2 units have, in addition, shallow iron balcony
fronts of C19 design to the 1st-floor windows.
