II

Detached house, recently used as public house. 1887. By John Belcher for himself. Red brick with tilehanging and stucco dressings; tiled steeply pitched roof to eaves. Shavian Domestic Revival manner. 2 ranges attached at right angles, splayed on corner. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, irregular fenestration. Depressed pointed arched, moulded entrance arch to right of left wing, flanked by mullioned windows; to left of this 1st-floor oriel and then extension with first tilehanging and further entrance. Right wing (with higher roof) tile-hung at 1st floor with gable to left and 1st-floor canted oriel to right. Multi-light leaded windows with mullions and, on 1st floor, transoms; alternate block surrounds to ground-floor windows, some leaded casements. 2 tall chimneys with moulded tops (a 3rd is now missing). INTERIOR: not inspected. Rare example of a house built for himself by a leading Victorian architect.
