II

Anglican church, now disused. 1888-9. By Ewan Christian. Red brick with stone dressings. STYLE: the overall style is Early English, the proportions adjusted and the surfaces made sheer for dramatic and expressive effect. PLAN: the main vessel of the building has a steeply pitched slate roof which maintains the same level from nave to chancel and wraps around the apsidal east end. A candle snuffer bell cote marks the division between the nave and transepts which scarcely project beyond the face of the narrow north and south aisles and which are linked, at the west end, by an equally narrow narthex. The main door of the church, which has a segmental pointed arch surmounted by a drip moulding, is at the south end of the narthex. EXTERIOR: west end has triple lancet window and has cross-shaped saddlestone and kneelers . Five bay nave with lancets to clerestorey and no windows to nave but pattern of pilasters . Gabled transepts with kneelers, cross-shaped saddlestones and double lancet linked by hood moulding. Apsidal chancel has lancets linked by hoodmoulding. Dogtooth cornice to nave and chancel. Slate bellcote between nave and transepts with spire and wooden bellchamber. INTERIOR: 5-bay arcade of brick, the piers without imposts. These support an impressive barrel-shaped timber ceiling. Light enters the building through clerestory and transept windows, there being no windows on the ground-floor level. The apse has been lined, probably in the early C20, with alternating panels of light and dark marble, and the windows in this part of the church are filled with stained glass by Clayton and Bell.
