CREMYLL STREET, Stonehouse
Swing bridge, Royal William Victualling Yard
GV II*
Swing bridge. c1833-5 by the Horsley Iron Co.Cast-iron. Matching halves on opposing sides of the entrance to the basin (qv) each consist of 4 braced plates bearing a wooden deck with railings and forming an elliptical arch, rotating on a cogged wheel and turned by handle. "HORSLEY IRON CO/NEAR/BIRMINGHAM" within a wreath of bay leaves and an anchor cast on the sides.
HISTORY: a very similar design to the swing bridge (qv), dated 1838, in the South Yard, Devonport Dockyard, by the same company. Intended by Rennie to improve circulation around the basin and graded for its contextual importance in this part of the Yard. The Yard is one of the most remarkable and complete early C19 industrial complexes in the country, and a unique English example of Neo-Classical planning of a state manufacturing site.
