Muster bell

GV II

Muster bell. Mid C19. Iron. Tall tapering shaft with 4 guy wires, a round capital and a bell, rotated by a spoked wheel.
HISTORY: the muster bell was used to summon the dockyard workforce and regulate the working day. A more decorative example remains at Chatham dockyard (qv). It is of historic importance within a largely complete ordnance yard, placed beside the main entrance for the workforce, the Morice Gate (qv). It was also used as an alarm bell.
