II
Viaduct bridge. c1845. By Joseph Gwilt. For Sir Thomas Maryon Wilson. Red brick with stone dressings. 5 tall arches with stone impost bands and heads and small transverse arches carry a bracketed stone cornice and parapet; south side with iron railings, north of stone capped brick. Channelled stone flanking piers and brick abutments. HISTORICAL NOTE: Sir Thomas Maryon Wilson, lord of the manor of Hampstead, was anxious to exploit his position on the fringes of built-up London. He employed Gwilt to lay out his East Park estate which was to be developed with exclusive villas. The viaduct bridge was the only part of this scheme ever undertaken and was accordingly known as "Wilson's Folly", Wilson failing to obtain Parliamentary authority for the enclosure of his land.
