15/04/98 Monolith (Empyrean) sculpture in
grounds of Kenwood
GV II
Vertical abstract sculpture. 1953 by Barbara Hepworth for the
London County Council, originally situated on the South Bank
and moved to Kenwood in 1963. Carved limestone, nearly nine
feet high. A vertical pierced slab. In the early 1950s
Hepworth reached maturity as a sculptor, and this is a good
and early example of her interest in standing stones set in
the landscape. It has also been suggested that it commemorates
the death of Hepworth's son, Paul Skeaping, killed flying for
the RAF in Malaya in 1953. It relates well to its setting at
Kenwood.
