Southampton House

II

House, now divided into flats. Early C19, restored and altered
mid/late C20. Yellow stock brick with plain stucco 1st floor
sill band.
3 storeys and semi-basement. Double-fronted with 3 windows.
Ground floor openings in shallow arched recesses; entrance,
approached by steps, in round-arched recess with patterned
fanlight, pilaster-jambs carrying cornice-head and panelled
door. Segmental arched recessed sashes with pointed lights in
segmental-arched recesses. Upper floor sashes with gauged
brick flat arches. Stucco plaque centrally at 2nd floor level
inscribed "Southampton House". Parapet.
INTERIOR: altered in C20 but retains stair with cast-iron
stick balusters, column newel and wreathed wooden handrail.
Doorways of hallway and entrance door with reeded frames
having stops of female masks wreathed in corn.
HISTORICAL NOTE: during the early C19 this was the Southampton
House Academy run by Capt John Bickerstaffe. Originally with a
side wing.
