HISTORICAL NOTE: Thomas Charles Druce was a furniture dealer in Baker Street. In 1896 his daughter-in-law claimed that he had been William John Cavendish Bentinck-Scott, fifth Duke of Portland, a noted recluse, leading a double life. In 1907 the grave was opened to test allegations that Druce's funeral had been false, with a coffin filled with lead weights; the coffin proving to contain Druce, three of the trial witnesses were indicted for perjury.
