GV II

Restaurant, offices and flats, formerly 2 terraced houses.
Late C18, altered in late C20. Multi-coloured stock brick,
patched, possibly following bomb damage; No.159 has slate
roof, No.161 concrete tiles. 4 storeys and cellars. 2 windows
each. Both have late C20 shopfronts with house doors to left.
Upper floors with gauged red brick flat arches to recessed
sashes. Many sashes late C20 replacements. Rear elevation of
No.161 has 3 early C19 sashes with cambered head linings and
narrow glazing bars and one later C19 sash.
INTERIOR: No.161 has vaulted brick cellars, round-headed arch
with bracket and wreath and spear design and dogleg staircase
with stick balusters and column newels. No.159 has vaulted
brick cellars and appears to have a similar staircase. The
ground floor of No.161 and the basement of Nos 159 and 161 are
linked with No.15 Warren Street (qv).
Included for group value with a series of listed buildings in
Warren Street. These buildings are, with Nos 131-137 Whitfield
Street (qv), the only original buildings to survive of a
terraced street, all formerly with early shopfronts,
associated with the former Fitzroy Market.
