Terrace of 9 houses with later shops. The rear portions of Nos
57 & 59 form Nos 12 & 13 Pond Square (qv) respectively.
No.51: mid C19, altered. Painted brick with slate roof.
3 storeys 3 windows. Wooden C20 Regency ground floor frontage
with pilasters carrying entablature with dentil cornice;
central segmental bowed window with mostly small panes.
Flanking doorways with radial fanlights and panelled doors.
Recessed 2-pane C20 sashes. Stepped brick cornice.
No.53: probably early C18, refronted early C20. Multi-colour
stock brick with tiled roof. 3 storeys and cellars. 2 windows.
Late C19 type wooden public house frontage with pilasters
carrying entablature with bracketed cornice. Paired central
entrances flanked by windows with panelled stallboards. Above
entrances, cymatium forms scrolled pediment with cartouche
with Prince of Wales's feathers. Cambered arches to recessed
sashes. Wooden bracketed cornice. HISTORICAL NOTE: Became a
public house mid C19.
No.55: 1893. Red brick with stone dressings in Flemish
Renaissance style. Slate roof. 2 storeys and attic. 3 windows.
Ground floor with 2 C20 reproduction C19 shopfronts. Entrance
to left with bracketed hood and part glazed panelled door.
Gauged brick flat arches to recessed sashes. 1st floor with
carved and rubbed brick panel with swag. Moulded brick cornice
at 2nd floor level. 3rd floor to left, gable with paired
sashes under moulded brick segmental pediment; ball terminals
and spike finial. To right, parapet with recessed panels,
those at angles with floral swags.
No.57: probably early C19, refronted 1893, in Georgian style.
Wooden shopfront with modified pilasters carrying entablature;
central segmental bowed brick window flanked by entrances with
radial fanlights. Gauged brick flat arches to flush sashes
with exposed boxing; 2nd floor with shaped brick aprons. Brick
cornice and parapet.
No.59: c1811 for C Lynne, refronted mid C19. Stucco with old
tile roof. 2 storeys 2 windows. C20 reproduction wooden
shopfront. Architraved recessed sashes with keystones.
Parapet.
No.61: C18, refronted mid/later C19. Stucco with rusticated
ground floor. Hipped tiled roof. 2 storeys 4 windows. Central
window bays recessed. Entrance to left with part glazed
panelled door. Modified entablature at 1st floor level,
cornice forming sills to 1st floor windows. Recessed sashes to
both floors. Cornice and blocking course.
No.63: c1828 for R Colson. Stucco. 2 storeys 1 window. Wooden
projecting shopfront with entablature and projecting moulded
cornice; glazing altered. To left, entrance with panelled door
and overlight, approached by steps. Segmental arched recessed
casement. Parapet.
No.65: early/mid C19 for R Colson. Darkened stock brick with
slated roof. 2 storeys. Double fronted with 2 windows. Lugged
stucco surrounds with keystones to recessed sashes and central
doorway with part glazed door. Parapet.
No.67: c1826. Multi-coloured stock brick. 3 storeys 3 windows.
2 wooden shopfronts; to left with projecting shop window and
entablature, to right with projecting cornice supported by
brackets. Part glazed panelled doors, central door with
overlight. Gauged brick flat arches to recessed sashes.
Parapet.
