Formerly known as: Primitive Methodist Sunday School DERBY ROAD.
Primitive Methodist Sunday School, now further education college. Dated 1890 in central gable; altered. By FW Dixon. Accrington brick with sandstone dressings and slate roofs. Eclectic style. Large rectangular plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 9-window range. Windows arranged 2:1:3:1:2. Symmetrical, with the large gabled centre linked to gabled wings by narrow single-window bays with balustraded parapets. The centre has gableted stone pilaster-buttresses to the ground floor, coupled pilasters to the taller upper floor, the outermost surmounted by urns which flank a tall gable with pilasters to a shaped and pedimented centre. The ground floor has large doorways in the outer bays, with overlights, and a pair of windows in the centre with mullioned top lights, beneath which is a foundation stone laid by WP Hartley Esq. 1890 (inscription).The upper floor has a large round-headed window in the centre with a keyed architrave, and wooden mullions and transoms forming 3 tiers of patterned stained glass lights with an unusual small pediment on the centre of the upper transom; rectangular windows in the outer bays with mullioned top lights and raised brick surrounds which have segmental-pedimented panels over them. In the centre of the gable is a wide stone plaque lettered: PRIMITIVE METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL 1890. The gabled wings, each with 2 narrow pilastered bays and a shaped gable, have windows at ground floor like those of the centre and round-headed windows at first floor. Sides and rear are plainer.
INTERIOR: reported to be remodelled.
Forms group with Methodist Church of St Mark to the north (qv).
