GV II

Methodist Sunday School and caretaker's house, now church
hall. c1891; altered, with some C20 additions. Coursed
sandstone rubble, slate roofs. Gothic style. Modified L-plan,
consisting of large hall on east-west axis with south wing at
east end and apsidal west wing to the centre of this.
EXTERIOR: the gabled west front of the hall is a
boldly-modelled asymmetrical composition with the roof to the
right carried down to meet a set-back integral porch which has
a lateral apse. The principal portion has massive buttresses
(carried up to pinnacles with saddleback coping) framing a
large 2-centred arched window which has a chamfered surround
and is divided vertically by 2 moulded mullions treated as
shafts and horizontally by a weathered sill, the lower part
having windows of 2:3:2 lights with intersecting cusped
tracery and the upper part having 1:2:1 tall lancet lights.
To the right the porch has a slightly-projected gabled doorway
chamfered in 2 orders, and projected from its south side is a
5-sided apse with weathered plinth, weathered sill, short
2-centred arched windows with quatrefoils in the heads, a
parapet and hipped roof.
The south side wall is now mostly covered by a C20 flat-roofed
extension.
South wing with a semicircular apse with a conical roof and
continuous arcaded lancet fenestration in which alternate
lights are blind.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Forms group with associated Leyland Road Methodist Church to
south (qv).
